Keep up to date with your pet’s flea treatment

This is the time of year when most of us will think about flea treatment for our pets. However, it is important to mention that due to central heating these days; fleas can be a problem all year round.

Featured is a diagram to show the flea life cycle, understanding this cycle is the first step to understanding why flea treatment should be kept up to date.

Flea treatments for the animal will kill adult fleas (1) and eggs (2), once the pupae stage starts (3-5) there is a hard protective outer shell which cannot be penetrated by the medication. Therefore the fleas must be encouraged to hatch into adults with heat, vibration or smell of a host so that they can be killed. This is why some fleas may still be seen a little while after flea treatment has been applied.

A surprising fact is that 95% of fleas and eggs actually live in the environment and not on the animal so to successfully control a flea infestation it is very important to use a household flea spray. Vacuuming before applying the household spray will help to bring fleas and eggs to the surface making the spray much more effective.

Once all the animals in the household have been treated with flea treatment and household spray has been applied, do not stop pets from going into areas where you know there have been fleas as the presence of a host will encourage the pupae to hatch out and then they can be killed.

Without the right conditions for pupae to hatch out, they can stay in their shells for up to one year! This is why every 4-8 weeks (depending on the flea treatment used) pets should be treated to stop a re-infestation.
